Automation Specialist

THE OPPORTUNITY:

We are currently working with an established industrial automation company in North Vancouver to identify an Automation Specialist to join their team. This role will focus on providing responsive, client-driven automation solutions, with responsibilities spanning control system design, programming, and troubleshooting.

The position offers a mix of office-based and field work, with the majority of work taking place in North Vancouver and occasional travel to client sites as required. The successful candidate will work closely with clients and project teams to develop and implement practical automation solutions based on their specific needs and project requirements.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY:

• Troubleshoot live industrial equipment in collaboration with client personnel.
• Design control systems for industrial applications.
• Develop modifications and upgrades to existing control systems as required.
• Prepare technical documentation to support design activities, work plans, and completed work.
• Design software systems for industrial applications.
• Develop modifications and enhancements to existing software systems as required.
• Document software designs using appropriate documentation platforms.
• Develop automation programming for PLCs, HMIs, historians, VFDs, PCs, and other automation systems as required.
• Develop code for database solutions and other information technology platforms.
• Perform Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) in the office or at client sites in accordance with documented test plans.
• Perform commissioning services at client sites in accordance with project schedules, including occasional work after hours, on weekends, and statutory holidays.
• Communicate effectively with clients regarding project progress while maintaining alignment with project objectives and company interests.
• Local travel to client sites in other cities as required to complete project work
• Manage time effectively, meet task deadlines, and provide regular updates to project managers.
• Provide accurate time estimates to management for assigned work.
• Record work hours and relevant comments in the company time-tracking system weekly and within established deadlines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Degree or diploma in Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution.
• 5+ years of relevant experience in machine controls, preferably with heavy machinery.
• 5+ years of PLC programming experience, preferably with Rockwell/Allen-Bradley systems.
• Strong understanding of instrumentation principles.
• Experience with HMI systems, preferably FTView, Wonderware, and/or Ignition.
• Understanding of industrial networking and switches is an asset.
• Strong technical documentation and report-writing skills.
• Mechanical aptitude is an asset.
• Experience working on medium- to large-scale projects.
• Flexibility to work night shifts and participate in on-call rotations as required.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

COMPENSATION:

• $90k to $110k/year
