THE OPPORTUNITY:

Are you a strategic storyteller with a passion for shaping how organizations communicate their impact? We are seeking a Director of Communications to lead the development and execution of a bold, integrated communications and marketing strategy. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and collaborating with senior leadership, you will oversee everything from brand messaging and media relations to digital engagement and event marketing. This is a high-impact role for a creative, forward-thinking communicator who excels at crafting compelling narratives and managing complex initiatives but also thrives in a fast-paced startup environment. The ideal candidate brings resilience, patience, and a collaborative spirit, embracing the unique pace of the non-profit sector, celebrating achievements as they come, and inspiring teams to create meaningful, lasting impact that elevates the organization’s voice and influence.

YOUR DAY-TO-DAY:

  • Communications and Media Relations Responsibilities
    • Developing and executing promotional campaigns for virtual and in-person events, including member meetups, webinars, ideation sessions, and project workshops.
    • Amplifying member stories, events, and announcements across marketing channels while building the client’s media presence. This includes creating content that positions department leaders as thought leaders and managing their social media profiles as part of the overall marketing strategy.
    • Managing the content calendar and contributing to the creation of collateral such as videos, blogs, impact stories, and corporate reports.
    • Creating and distributing the monthly newsletter.
    • Coordinating logistics and run-of-show details for tradeshows, webinars, and other events.
    • Researching and maintaining the member and organization event calendar.
    • Creating and managing the social media calendar and campaigns.
    • Segmenting and maintaining the contact database to support targeted marketing initiatives.
    • Managing media relations, including drafting news releases, media kits, presentations, and other communications materials.
    • Preparing briefing materials and supporting spokespeople for media interviews and external speaking engagements.
    • Leading proactive and reactive communications related to issues and crisis management.
    • Developing and executing local and national media strategies, including story pitches, earned media opportunities, and reporter relations.
    • Supporting internal communications needs, such as staff presentations and corporate publications.
    • Developing and implementing community engagement strategies, including speaking opportunities and sponsorship initiatives.
    • Managing external contractors and vendors to produce content aligned with the communications strategy.
    • Liaising between program teams and members to capture and share organizational impact and outcomes.
    • Collaborating with the government relations team to align on supporting communications activities and assets.
    • Developing processes and procedures from the ground up while contributing creative ideas to advance the communications strategy and enhance the organization’s value to its members.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5-10 years of progressive experience in communications, public relations, or marketing.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic communications, media relations, and crisis management.
  • Experience writing communications and messaging for both government relations and private-sector audiences, including compliance-related content.
  • Established relationships with media contacts that can be leveraged to support communications initiatives.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and oversee complex communication initiatives.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong aptitude for strategic thinking and long-term planning.
  • Skilled in copywriting, editing, and creating content across various platforms.
  • In-depth knowledge of brand messaging, public relations practices, and digital media strategies.
