As the Senior Detail Designer, you will be responsible for participating in all phases of Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfitting design assignments on new construction and repair projects. This includes developing 3D models and drawings, preparing designs, providing engineering support, executing designs, carrying out design close-out activities, and providing production support.

In addition, the Senior Detail Designer will work closely with internal and external partner design teams to ensure that the ship design is in line with current equipment information, applicable rules and regulations, production design standards, and assigned procedures.

These duties are crucial in ensuring that the goals and objectives of the design projects are met within the stipulated engineering plans, schedule, budget, and project requirements.


  • Leading and supervising the Hull & Interior Outfitting process of the ship’s design.
  • Regularly communicating issues and critical initiatives of the project team to management.
  • Delegating design & drafting work to team members, ensuring work suits individual competencies and has appropriate supervision.
  • Providing mentorship and guidance to less experienced designers or subcontractors in the engineering and design discipline of Hull & Interior Outfitting.
  • Providing subject area expertise to lead design, including: 
    • Preparing and reviewing design and functional packages to ensure requirements are met.
    • Producing integrated 3D models based on engineering documentation, class society rules and regulations, flag rules, and company & international standards.
    • Developing design solutions and preparing detail design production documentation (MI packages) within project schedule and budget.
  • Developing and reviewing design drawings for icebreaking, naval replenishment, and different support or multi-purpose vessels to achieve customer approval, Classification Society, and flag regulatory compliance.
  • Ensuring use of appropriate design methods and completion of pertinent design checks.
  • Developing material specifications and bills of material in accordance with company’s material strategies and customer requirements.
  • Actively supporting the development of design standards by identifying areas of improvement in processes, tools, and training to increase efficiency, responsiveness, and product quality.
  • Providing technical support to production and performing trade studies to determine cost-effective solutions to design problems, meeting material budgets for systems assigned.
  • Nurturing communication and collaboration with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.

  • Technical Diploma or Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Systems, Naval Architecture, or Marine.
  • 10+ years’ experience in Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfitting Detailed Design within the shipbuilding industry, manufacturing, or other heavy industries environment.
  • Experience working with classification society requirements.
  • Knowledge of marine Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfitting design, including detailed knowledge of hull outfitting and interior outfitting systems and production best practices.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work independently to develop solutions to sophisticated technical problems.
  • Expert analytical skills with the ability to gather and analyze/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as an integral part of the collective analysis/synthesis process.
  • Strong technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear and detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Excellent communication skills including written, verbal, listening, and presentation.
  • Availability and willingness to travel as required to meet business needs.
  • Commitment to a high standard of safety, following all safety laws, regulations, and organizational safety policies.
  • Good judgment with the ability to make decisions in a manner consistent with the crucial job functions.
  • PC proficiency, including working knowledge of basic Microsoft Office software suite (including Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.)


  • Shipyard experience is highly desired and marine industry experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with a diverse integrated project team.
  • Knowledge of the design and/or construction of the following ship types is considered a strong asset: 
    • icebreakers 
    • research vessels
    • multi-purpose vessels
    • fishing vessels
    • naval auxiliary vessels
  • Knowledge of MRP, purchasing, and management systems.
  • Experience with Cadmatic.


  • Sole Proprietor: $40-$50/hr max
  • Incorporated: $45-$53/hr max
