Recruiting: An art and a science.

I was having a conversation with an internal corporate recruiter recently. We got to talking about how surprised the HR team is by his recruiting process. From posting the role on LinkedIn to negotiating offers. He is literally teaching the organization how to recruit from the ground up. Now this organization is not a new startup. They’ve been around for more than 10 years. This got me thinking… “You don’t know what you don’t know.”

I am thinking there are probably lots of companies across Canada and the US right now that put their jobs up on the job boards and hope for the best. They think job seekers would just love to work for them simply by reading their job description online.

More than likely those companies don’t have someone applying a sense of urgency in creating great reading job advertisements, doing market research and passive candidate sourcing, executing skillful telephone screens, coaching hiring teams and then negotiating offers. Recruiting top talent is as much an art as it is a science. Every organization that wants to compete in this “war for talent” should have staff, consultants, or external advisors that own these processes and know how to deliver on each of these critical stages. If they don’t they’re going to lose great talent to their competitors.
