Mechanical Technologist
THE OPPORTUNITY:
Our client, a well-established multidisciplinary engineering and design firm, is seeking a Mechanical Technologist to join their team in Abbotsford, BC.
In this role, you will contribute to the design and delivery of HVAC and mechanical systems for residential, commercial, and light industrial buildings. The successful candidate will support projects from conception through completion, collaborate with senior technical staff, and help ensure the delivery of safe, energy-efficient, and technically sound mechanical designs. This position also involves preparing and coordinating Revit-based design documentation, conducting site visits, and liaising with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders to support successful project outcomes.
YOUR DAY-TO-DAY:
- Assisting with the design of building mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection, for projects across Canada while applying relevant codes, standards, and technical references
- Completing assigned project scopes with a high level of independence and minimal supervision
- Preparing contract drawings, schematics, schedules, details, and conceptual sketches, progressing designs from initial concept through construction documentation
- Producing mechanical design drawings using Revit MEP and AutoCAD
- Coordinating mechanical system layouts and design requirements with other engineering and design disciplines
- Performing heating and cooling load calculations using company-standard software tools
- Supporting the development of energy models and assisting in the preparation of energy modelling reports and compliance documentation
- Contributing to the quality control of project deliverables to ensure accuracy and consistency
- Preparing drawings and specifications in accordance with internal design standards and projects v-specific design requirements
- Reviewing shop drawings and contractor submittals to confirm compliance with project specifications and construction documents
- Conducting site surveys, field reviews, and as-built documentation to support drawing development and project accuracy
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5–7 years of experience working in a consulting engineering environment
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related technical discipline
- Proficiency with Revit and AutoCAD for mechanical design and drafting
- Strong knowledge of building mechanical systems, including HVAC, heating and cooling, and plumbing
- Solid understanding of building science principles, including heat transfer, thermodynamics, and airflow fundamentals
- Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NFPA, NECB, ASHRAE, and relevant local building and plumbing codes
- Familiarity with IES Virtual Environment (IESVE) for developing energy models and preparing energy modelling reports
- Experience using cooling load calculation software, such as HAP or Trace 700
- Exposure to energy modelling and load calculation tools, including EE4, ComCheck, HAP, HOT2000, eQuest, DesignBuilder, OpenStudio, EnergyPlus, IES, and/or PHPP
- Knowledge of LEED certification requirements considered an asset
COMPENSATION:
- $70,000 – 85,000/year
